Small Town Pride

Updated: Aug 20, 2019

If you are not from around here, Oregon, MO is a very small town, population 800 something. It is located about 30 min from a "bigger city", St Joseph, MO. And St Joseph may still be considered a small town by some measures with a population of less than 100,000. We are about 6 miles from the interstate. If you stay on the main black top you will run right into us. We are easy to find if you go looking. although Oregon doesn't have any stop lights an only one confusing half block long one way street, our community heart is bigger than all of our surrounding farmlands put together.

I am not from here. A lot of the people that live here are. My husband (aka: The Intern) was born and raised here. I moved around a lot when I was younger and no other place I lived, big or small compares to the great community we have here in Oregon.

When someone needs help they get it. No questions asked. and you probably won't even have to ask. I have never been to so many benefit auctions, soup and chili suppers, fish fry or bake sales in my entire life as I have in the last hand full of years I have lived here.

We have volunteer clubs, organizations and churches that take care of all of the community needs. If a family needs a hand up they get it. If a farmer needs his field harvested because of a sudden health problem, the whole town, individuals and businesses, come together to get it done. The county fair is run completely on volunteers and fundraising. And the best volunteer fire dept around is also the volunteer cookers, cleaners, movers, setter-uppers, etc at just about every event. It's amazing.

The few businesses in town are small. They also always help any way they can. They are constantly asked for donations for this benefit auction or that community event and they always come through. They may not be huge corporations with deep pockets and but they sure pour their hearts and what extra they do have into our community. They donate to every cause, they help fund raise whenever needed.

Although it may not look like much, it is an amazing place with amazing people. If you are ever close by (within 30 minutes or so :)), be sure to come in to town. Stop by a restaurant or gas station and you can get all the info you need from about anyone in the place. We have a fabulous museum, a gas station that still pumps your gas for you and probably one of the last working telephone booths in existence. Definitely worth a selfie or two.

So come see us here in Oregon! We even have a Facebook page here! And while you are in town, you might as while go a couple miles down the road to our friends and neighbors in Forest City, MO. They also have a lot to brag about. It is even smaller than Oregon and still has an awesome drug store museum that serves ice cream on Sundays during the summer, a music hall of fame that boasts the unbelieveable amount of local music talent, and a great litte diner to get all your down home meals. Check out their Facebook page HERE.

Hope to see you soon! As always, thanks for stopping by!
